Marketing 101 03/03/2010

So Acer has changed their minds about getting into the e-Reader business. Acer has cancelled their upcoming release of their own models citing the e-Reader market is still too small. It's not that the market is too small, it's that there are too many companies (50 or so) jumping into an immature business model.

There are way too many e-Readers being released in 2010 and my complaint is that most of them are clones of the Kindle or Nook. There is nothing remarkable about the majority of new models and few have any unique selling proposition (UPS) that will make consumers want to rush out and buy them.

Yes e-Readers are a hot market right now but we don't even know what will happen in the next two years. Qualcomm's & Asus color technology may wipe out gray scale e-ink e-Readers or maybe the new generation Tablet PCs will become so pleasant to read with, few people will want dedicated e-Readers. So I think some of these electronics companies should really go back to school and learn how to make e-Readers that really stand out from the crowd.
